The IB Diploma Programme offers three major science subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Each subject develops students’ ability to investigate scientific problems through experimentation, data analysis, and logical reasoning, and all three share the same assessment structure below.   • IB Physics — mechanics, waves, electricity, thermal and nuclear physics

IB Science Assessment Structure

All IB science subjects follow a similar assessment structure combining written examinations and practical investigation.

Paper 1A — Multiple Choice Questions

Students answer conceptual multiple-choice questions testing understanding of key scientific principles.

Paper 1B — Data-Based Questions

Students analyse experimental data, graphs, and scientific scenarios.

Paper 2 — Short Answer and Extended Response Questions

Students solve structured problems and explain scientific reasoning using calculations, diagrams, and written explanations.

Internal Assessment (IA)

Students design and conduct their own scientific investigation, analyse results, and write a formal scientific report. IA counts for 20% of the final IB grade and assesses a student’s ability to apply scientific methodology independently.
